The achievement of degree-granting status (Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Design) brought a name change from College to Institute in 1995. Facilities were then developed to allow students to explore digital technology. The first decade of the new millennium has seen Emily Carr University develop collaborative relationships with other universities in the province along with a new emphasis on critical and cultural studies. The school opened its Intersections Digital Studio, a dedicated research centre for new technologies, in 2006, and that same year began offering a Master of Applied Arts degree, with streams in design, visual art and media arts. Prospective international students who meet our portfolio and academic requirements but do not meet our minimum English proficiency requirements (IELTS score may not be below 5.5 in any skill area) may apply for the Creative Art Pathway program (CAP).
Conception and foundation
Our design majors encourage you to be leading ‘Citizen Designers’ in the new creative- and knowledge-based economies, mindful of the power and consequences of design across a range of fields. In September 2017, Emily Carr University moved to a purpose-built, 290,000 sq. Ft. campus in the formerly industrial False Creek Flats neighbourhood southeast of downtown Vancouver.
Sculpture + Expanded Practices
Our curriculum is flexible, personal, multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary and based on the learning needs of students. Students have the opportunity to apply for co-op credits, internships and an exchange program that currently features membership with 75 art and design schools in Canada, the US, Mexico, and Europe. Your portfolio is a way to show us your process, your ideas, and your best work. Classes at Emily Carr are conducted in English, and your success depends on your English proficiency. Regardless of your immigration or citizenship status, if English is not your first language and you do not qualify for an exemption, you will need to provide evidence of adequate English proficiency to be considered for any of our degree programs. This program provides English proficiency upgrading courses alongside Emily Carr studio courses. Emily Carr University is dedicated to providing access and support for all applicants and particularly underrepresented populations. The university will consider indigenous applicants who are 19 years of age or older and who do not meet the current academic standing required for admission to Foundation or on transfer. Applicants who qualify under this category will be considered on the basis of their educational background, cultural knowledge, work experience, academic goals, personal achievements, and current artistic portfolio. In 2022, 335 Art and Design students graduated with students earning 265 Bachelor's degrees, and 70 Master's degrees.
